E-mobility: a holistic solution that brings prosperity

Electromobility currently receives wide recognition as an opportunity to make our cities more sustainable and liveable. DEMO-EC project disseminates the e-mobility practises.

One of the highlighted topic in the 3rd semester of the project is E-mobility

Electromobility currently receives wide recognition as an opportunity to make our cities more sustainable and liveable. However, the lack of city-wide charging infrastructure and the limited driving range of electric vehicles are barriers for the wider deployment. Genoa city has developed own solutions how to overcome that obstacle, especially considering that the city has hilly landscape which has always been a challenge.

DEMO-EC project has enabled to disseminate the e-mobility practises among project consortium. The Study visit that has been organized in April in Genoa make possible to learn on solutions carried out so far. Car sharing service operates in Genova with a station-based system and a fleet of 60 cars (city, medium and van). Two of these cars are electric and are located in the city centre. The service is managed since 2013 by the private company Aci Global S.p.A.

Due to its geographical structure Genova has natural barriers that close the city between the see and the hills. Several electric upstream infrastructures are a practical solution to reach quickly the hills above the city and can be used with all the travel tickets of the urban network:

• 2 funiculars (Sant'Anna and Zecca-Righi)
• 1 railway rack (Principe-Granarolo)
• 12 lifts
• 1 suburban railway

E-mobility is still under development. The fast charging stations are one of the high-tech solution that could foster the e-mobility. E-buses contribute to this development as well.
However, do we still want to have cars, although they are e-cars, on the street or shall we give the opportunity rather to active mobility such as walking and cycling? The question is in place.

Mobility management as part of the municipal development

DEMO-EC project fosters low-carbon transport in cities through integration of mobility management by combining the fields of mobility behaviour change, governance, e-mobility, car reduction, walking, cycling and public transport. Each city deals with the issues separately and make a unique goals and solution. They make the decisions and select measures based on their mobility situation, based on tradition, city size, fund availability and realistic implementation in the given timeframe.

On Feb. 22, 2018, we held an evening meeting with the stakeholders from interested groups related to the cycling in Liberec´s Ateliér. We presented the aim to prepare a complex analysis of the stage of cycling infrastructure as a measure to support the development of low carbon transport in the city. The participants were informed on the stage of preparation of the analysis, timetable and cycle-measures included. There was a wide discussion on the measures including raising new proposals and reviewing the ones presented. The analysis is to be reviewed upon those conclusions and finalised by the end of March 2018. We are aiming at discussing the paper at the Transport commission of the City Council and also at presenting it to the City Council and relevant municipal departments. The analysis shall be utilized as a concrete tool for enhancing the infrastructure for cyclist in Liberec as well as to provide a real support for cycling as a regular part of the urban mobility system. The participants were also informed on the progress with launching bikesharing in the city that is going to be in operation from March 21st 2018. The proposed location of the cycle-stands and the area of operation was discussed as well.

On April 10th, 2018, a regional dissemination meeting was held. The occasion was a joint Czech-German workshop on the transport topic. 42 participants were present. The main goal of the meeting was to present the panned transport arrangement in the two partner towns and to discuss the potential for development of the cross border region. City representatives informed on the mobility project under preparation. We presented the DEMO-EC as the way of inspiration in the support of active mobility in the city. Than the interest groups and transport companies open the discussion on inter-regional railway and automobile network. The minutes of the meeting were published on the Liberec´s city web site. The minutes incl. the presentations and pictures were also distributed via email.
